RETURNING TO THE EU

Do the titre test before leaving Europe

Morocco is not on the EU list of third countries exempt from the rabies antibody titration requirement. Normally, a dog entering the EU from an unlisted country needs a successful titre test and a 3-month wait after the blood sample. But that 3-month wait does not apply when the successful test was done before leaving the EU and the result is recorded in the EU pet passport. This is the key reason not to postpone the test until Morocco.

Expect veterinary document and identity checks

ONSSA states that live animals are checked at authorised border inspection posts. Officials can check the documents, the animal’s identity and its health. Travel with the original documents and confirm your chosen ferry port or airport can handle the veterinary control before departure.

BANNED DOGS

Check the Moroccan dangerous-dog list

ONSSA prohibits the import of dogs in categories it lists as dangerous: pit bull types (Staffordshire Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Bull Terrier), boerbull/Mastiff, and Tosa. If your dog is one of these breeds, a cross, or could be classified similarly, confirm admissibility with ONSSA before booking.

Do not treat the EU pet passport as the only document

An EU pet passport is extremely useful for the return journey, but Morocco publishes a separate veterinary health-certificate model for entry. Plan the paperwork with your vet and the competent veterinary authority, and also check your ferry or airline’s own pet rules.
